I don't think this is a fail at all. I was really attracted to the colour scheme (that pale maroon of the hair is a very popular colour for spring)

What I do think, though, is that the lighting is confusing. There are many suggestions of a light source, but it's not really clear where it is coming from. The hair suggests that the light source is above, and to the front. The nose suggests that the light source is downward and to the right. The neck and eyes suggest that the light is coming in from the left.

All in all, this can be visually confusing for the brain to interpret what it is looking at. It can also make perfectly drawn features seem misshapen simply because they are being lit from the wrong angle as opposed to the rest of the face. Then the brain sees them as a different shape than intended because it automatically contours the illusion of the drawing to the shading.

When colouring a portrait like this, I would suggest to plan out where the light is in 3D space before you start to colour. Decide where it is, how bright it is (natural or artificial? Sunlight? Moonlight? Streetlamp?) and what your colour scheme is. Are they in the middle of a green forrest with green light from above? Are they standing under a grungy streetlamp at night casting heavy shadows and colouring their face yellow? This can add both accuracy and drama to your drawing and really make it pop. And if you're not satisfied with one way of lighting, you can always experiment with others. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)"/>
